One of the online games I run is the Strange Aeons Adventure Path by Paizo Publishing. They are an excellent company that publishes the high fantasy RPG, Pathfinder and other materials related to that game and its setting. While the Pathfinder game is excellent, we have rolled with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition because several of my players are more familiar with it and like it quite a bit. I may have more to say in future articles about my opinions on each of the systems but that isn’t really relevant here.
Stranges Aeons is high fantasy mashed up with eldritch horror. It’s basically Dungeons & Dragons sprinkled heavily with Cthulhu-esque trappings. It definitely isn’t eldritch horror because the Player Characters are still powerful, competent people with a great deal of agency. They can stand up and fight the monsters that the main characters in most eldritch horror fiction cannot. In other words, these heroes are not doomed to death and insanity.
