Strange Aeons (E26): First Steps on a Long Journey

The Party departs Thrushmoor on The Sellen Starling. Captain Freeling explains that they can either help out or get out of the way. Up to them. Most of the group start pitching in to help with whatever tasks they can. None of them are terribly familiar with ships in general. The crew of halflings find Gardain bumbling around the rigging to be vastly amusing. Strummer is assigned duties with Milo, the newest sailor aboard The Starling. Zach and Enni are engaged in studying The Pnakotic Manuscripts and Count Lowl’s Journal.

Fog rolls in off the marshy coast of southeastern Ustalav. The Starling passes by the village of Illmarsh and notice the villagers placing a large chain between the ends of their wharfs, blocking any attempt by ships to dock there. Captain Starling muttered that she didn’t particularly like the Illmarshers and had no intention of docking there in any case. Gardain and Merigold in the crow’s nest notice a ship a little distance behind them ghosting through the fog banks. It is a longship with red sails. It disappears into the fog and doesn’t show up again.

Enni and Zach complete their study of Lowl’s Journal. They determine that Lowl’s was looking to speak to an entity in the Dreamlands called The Mad Poet. This person was very powerful, dangerous, and capricious. He would speak to those who brought him the correct gifts but often rebuffed those who did not with dire consequences. Lowl’s had collected the gifts he determined were appropriate and gone to speak with the Poet. The end of the Journal had a ritual that would let the party enter the Dreamlands.

Strummer and Milo are attacked by a Bunyip while fishing of the side of the ship. The bunyip is killed but does significant damage to Strummer and Gardain.

Early in the morning while anchored off the coast of northern Razmiran, Enni and Gardain see a Nereid in the water. The fey woman interacts with them, explaining that she doesn’t particularly like the humans that currently ply her waters. They are… bothersome. She invites Enni to join her in the water for breakfast and Enni is strongly, almost magically, inclined to go but Gardain restrains her and Captain Freeling makes a hasty departure from the area.

That wrapped up our session. Will the party follow Lowls into the Dreamlands? Will someone get eaten by a sea monster? Will Gardain learn to competently reef a sail? We’ll find out next time.
